Turtle Conservation:

The beaches of Cape Verde are one of the most visited sites for nesting Loggerhead Sea turtles and the species play a critical role in maintaining the local marine eco-system. Their nesting grounds are however at risk due to coastal developments, nest predation and human interference. By joining this program you and members of the local community will work to ensure the safety of nesting female turtles. As a participant on this program you will be directly saving numerous nesting sea turtles and hatchlings. The activities you help with will change according to local weather and beach conditions, however typical activities during the week will include:

  • Patrolling the beaches at night and in the morning to monitor nesting,
  • Transporting eggs into safe hatcheries to protect them from humans and predators,
  • Educating the community and local children about the importance of turtles in the marine ecosystem,
  • Feeding, cleaning, and taking care of hatchlings until they are fit and strong enough to be released into the ocean!

Looking to stay longer?

If you would like to extend your stay beyond two weeks this can easily be arranged in week long blocks. You can choose to either take part in more volunteering work at the turtle conservation site, or if you fancy some adventurous activities, why not add on a trekking week to end your volunteering trip on a high!
