Days 1 & 2: Introduction & Activity First Aid

Upon arrival in Wales you will have the chance to meet your fellow trainees and receive a pre-course introduction and briefing. Once settled in you’ll begin your Activity First Aid (16hrs) certification, a nationally recognised qualification and essential for any aspiring outdoor leader - providing a good foundation of medical knowledge, and a valuable addition to your CV. We will cover the approach to first aid in an outdoors and activity setting and look at effective responses to a range of possible injuries, illness, and medical incidents.

Days 3 & 4: Activity First Aid & RLSS National Water Safety

The morning of the third day will be spent finishing of your Activity First Aid qualification - hopefully you’ve been paying attention as its assessment time! The following day and a half will be spent completing the RLSS National Water Safety Management Programme. An important course, it will equip anyone working in, on or near water with essential knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions about managing safety.

Day 5: Off-Site Safety Management Course (OSSM)

A crucial course for any outdoor leader, the RGS Off-Site Safety Management Course offers an in-depth look at the safety management issues involved in planning, managing and evaluating expeditions. You will learn to assess the needs of a group, deal with both minor and major incidents, undertake risk assessments and outline the key requirements relating to group safety during an activity.

Day 6: British Canoeing Paddle Awards - Kayak Training

Get ready for a day on the water as you start your British Canoeing Paddle Awards (Start, Discover, Explore). A day of kayak training will equip you with the skills needed to operate safely on the water whilst developing your leadership skills.

Day 7: OSSM & Expedition Medicine Scenarios

Finishing the OSSM course in the morning, the rest of the day will be set aside for medical scenario training. Building on the skills you learnt during the First Aid qualification, you will begin to develop the skills and knowledge needed to deal with medical incidents that may occur in an outdoor environment. We will run a number of complex scenarios to help improve your skills!

Day 8: Mental Health First Aid

Our bespoke Mental Health First Aid course provides participants with an overview of possible mental health conditions that clients, or fellow team members, may experience. An increasingly important topic, this phase of training outlines how travel, challenging experiences, and different environments may impact an individual’s mental health.

Day 9: British Canoeing Paddle Awards - Canoe Training

A final day of water-sports training will be spent mastering your canoeing skills! Building on the lessons learnt on day 6, you’ll get the chance to develop your decision making and fundamental skills.

Day 10: Expedition Medicine Scenarios & Depart

A fitting finale will see you put all the skills you have learnt over the last nine days to the test! A final morning of medical scenarios will see you tasked with managing incidents of increasing difficulty, complexity, and severity. A final debrief and farewell from the course staff will bring to an end your training and the start of your outdoor journey!
