WEEK 1: Mountain skills and First Aid introduction
The first week will develop your key mountain skills such as navigation, kit selection, and group management as a platform for your Mountain Leader Training later in the course. You’ll also begin training for the Activity First Aid level 2 certification, an essential qualification for any aspiring outdoor leader.
WEEK 2: Safety Training - Land & Water
Alongside finishing up your first aid qualification you will progress to building the skills and knowledge for two further national governing body awards: the Water Safety Management programme with the Royal Life Saving Society and the Off-Site Safety Management certificate with the Royal Geographical Society.
WEEK 3: Advanced Mountain and Leadership skills plus Kayak training
This week’s focus is on developing your personal leader brand and gaining an understanding of leadership traits and responsibilities. While these theoretical aspects are important, practical training still makes up the bulk of this week as you complete the British Canoeing Paddle Awards (Start, Discover, Explore) and continue your mountain training with night navigation and an overnight expedition into the mountains of Snowdonia.
WEEK 4: Mountain Leader Training
The final week of the course sees you complete your Summer Mountain Leader Training. This is the accredited training course you need to complete before assessment as a UK Summer Mountain Leader and will build on the skills you have developed over the previous three weeks. This will be another active, rugged week covering advanced navigation, dealing with hazards, wild camping, night navigation and much more.
The course ends with a careers workshop, exploring the options available to you as you begin your career in the outdoor industry! A final debrief and farewell from the course staff will bring to an end your training and the start of your outdoor journey!
This course is largely practical and much of your training and skills development will take place on days out in Snowdonia. You will be trained to route plan, have the opportunity to lead a group, practice incident management and the mountains of North Wales will certainly give you some experience in dealing with inclement weather. On top of your Mountain Leader training, you will have the opportunity to bag 8 Quality Mountain Days as part of a group, with the ability to refer to the pros to optimise your performance. This will add real value to the logbook of anyone looking to complete their Mountain Leader award after the course.
