Conquering Fears and Jumping From Planes in South Africa

Skydiving in South Africa on a gap year

Read our first update from the first week on our South Africa Adventure program, courtesy of Max Bushman!

The first week we all got together for the first time and got to cruise around Capetown. It was pretty cool seeing everything this amazing city has to offer. We went on the hop-on hop-off bus and stopped at one of the stunning beaches. I took some pictures that came out really pretty and later in the week we got around to hiking Lion’s head and Table Mountain. At first it was really hard, but we all ended up having a blast going down the mountains.

Later, we moved along to Mosselbai and some of us went shark cage diving while the others stayed behind (because they were too scared!). My top three fears are sharks, heights, and spiders. So I thought it would be a once-in-a-lifetime-experience to grow and get over my fear of sharks, so in I went! I saw Great White Sharks up close and saw how they really are. They’re nothing like they’re portrayed in movies and stories. They’re just innocent creatures who want to live in peace just like we do. It definitely helped me get over my fear of sharks and I’m so happy Gapforce provided that opportunity for me.

Later that day some of us went on a walk with Lions. I love all animals, but my favourite kind are cats. All types of cats. So walking behind one of the strongest and most famous kind of cat was absolutely incredible.

The next day we went skydiving(!). Now that was intense.

I was looking forward to conquering this fear as well because I knew I could. I knew I could do it because of the shark cage diving. This experience taught me that some things aren’t as bad as they may seem at first. When I jumped out of that plane I almost passed out. It was one of the best things I have ever done though.

We all left Mosselbai a new person. An incredible first week!

Now we’re in Oudtshoorn and working on our next adventure.
