Expert guidance, every step of the way
You’ll train with highly qualified PADI Dive Instructors, supported by a dedicated local coordinator at the dive centre. From day one, you’ll have expert guidance, ongoing support, and 24/7 assistance to ensure you get the most out of your experience in Costa Rica.
Your adventure begins in San José

Here you’ll be met and transferred to our PADI Five Star Dive Centre on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. After settling in and meeting your fellow trainees and instructors, you’ll begin your first professional dive training with the Emergency First Responder and Rescue Diver certifications.
These essential qualifications teach you how to respond confidently in emergency situations and mark the final step in your recreational dive training – preparing you to begin your journey into the professional diving world.
Over 10 weeks you’ll progress from advanced diver to fully qualified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, while gaining hands-on experience in marine conservation and dive resort operations.

You’ll spend five weeks working toward your PADI Divemaster certification, your first professional level qualification. Training becomes far more hands-on as you learn to guide dives, assist instructors with students, and build the leadership skills needed to work in the dive industry.
During this phase you’ll also complete the PADI Marine Conservation and Research speciality. As a PADI Aware partner centre, our dive school is committed to protecting the ocean. You’ll learn reef ecology, species identification, and marine survey techniques before conducting your own conservation survey.

This week focuses on the practical skills needed to work at a dive resort. You’ll gain experience in boat handling, equipment maintenance, and GPS mapping of dive sites, while learning the day-to-day operations behind a successful dive centre.
You’ll also earn additional certifications including PADI Self-Reliant Diver and Adaptive Support Diver, developing independence underwater and learning techniques to support divers with a range of needs.

The final stage of your journey prepares you to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. During the Instructor Development Course (IDC) you’ll learn how to teach PADI courses, followed by Emergency First Response Instructor training.
Your course concludes with the PADI Instructor Examination (IE) — a two-day external assessment that certifies you as a professional dive instructor.
To round things off, you’ll also prepare for PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, adding five speciality instructor certifications to your résumé.
No two days are exactly the same, but most include a mix of classroom learning, practical training, and time in the water.

Mornings might start with dive briefings and training dives on Costa Rica’s vibrant reefs, while afternoons often involve workshops, marine ecology lessons, conservation work, or assisting instructors with student divers.
Throughout the programme you’ll build confidence leading dives, teaching skills, and working as part of a professional dive team.

There’s still plenty of time to enjoy everything Costa Rica has to offer.

With flexible afternoons and free time built into the schedule, you can explore the region’s beautiful beaches, wildlife reserves, surf spots, volcanoes, and rainforest trails.
Many participants spend their downtime relaxing on the coast, heading out on extra dives, or exploring nearby towns with new friends.

Successful graduates leave as fully qualified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors, ready to work in dive centres around the world.
Outstanding participants may even be offered the opportunity to gain additional experience working at the dive school in Costa Rica, helping boost their confidence and career prospects. Your instructors can also offer guidance on the many pathways available in the global diving and marine conservation industry.
This programme is ideal for anyone looking to become an internationally recognised dive and first aid instructor, while gaining real-world experience in conservation and dive resort operations.
Participants must be 18 or over, able to swim 200 metres, and have a reasonable level of fitness. You’ll also need a signed medical form confirming you’re fit to dive.
If you’re passionate about the ocean, eager to develop professional skills, and ready for an unforgettable adventure, this programme could be the perfect next step.

A Unique Gap Year Experience
I loved every second of my time in South Africa. The staff were fantastic, especially the rangers who were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about conservation.
There was a great balance between classroom learning, fieldwork and hands-on volunteer activities. The volunteer house was really nice, and it was great meeting people from around the world.
After qualifying, I stayed in touch with the reserve and even returned to intern and gain more experience. This was a 10/10 experience and I’d recommend it to anyone interested in the environment or getting into the guiding industry.
