Gap Year Programs In Sumatra
Why Take a Gap Year in Sumatra
Sumatra in Western Indonesia is the sixth largest island in the world and is truly an explorer’s paradise. Off the main tourist beaten track, the vast majority of the island remains undiscovered. Most of the highlights are in the north including Bukit Lawang, a jungle-shrouded river offering the best chance in Indonesia to see orangutans in the wild.
In 2017 we were honoured to link up with The Orangutan Information Centre in Sumatra, where teams of Gapforce volunteers helped with reforestation efforts in the orangutans natural habitat, learned about the efforts of the orangutan rescue teams and worked on a permaculture project educating local farmers on sustainable farming methods to reduce their reliance on palm oil. Although we are not currently sending teams to Sumatra we hope that we one day will do so again. Until then, if you are interested in travelling to Southeast Asia why not check out our Southeast Asia Explorer.
