BORNEO & BALI
From the jungles of Borneo to the beaches of Bali, this 8 week program combines volunteering on our unique Orang-utan protection project with an amazing South East Asia Island adventure!
Contribute to protecting the endangered Orang-utan in one of the oldest and most beautiful rainforests in the world- Borneo! Working with an awarded Orang-utan Rehabilitation Project, we head deep into the jungle to help improve the infrastructure of jungle camps used as a base to release Orang-utans back into the wild. You will have seen what this project does on the BBC TV series "Orangutan Diary". You’ll also be part of Orang-utan patrols, tracking and monitoring previously released Orang-utans in the wild.
On completion of our jungle adventure we head to Bali - River Rafting, volcano adventure, snorkelling in the clear warm Java Sea, Bali cooking lessons, and cycle tours provides an action-packed balance to your vital work in the rainforests of Borneo.
Borneo to Bali with Gapforce is your unique gap year mix of volunteering, exploring and beaches
- Contribute to a real, frontline (and much needed) Orang-utan conservation project
- Witness the true wonders of unexplored primary rainforest
- Challenge yourself whilst trekking through an entirely unique environment
- Hit back and relax on some of the most stunning beaches you’ll ever see
- Get a full Bali experience through travel both in and off the island
- Share it all with a group of like-minded people!
First and foremost, if you’re hoping to get up close and hands on with Orang-utans, this is not the program for you. There are hundreds of injured Orang-utans we are hoping to re-release into the wild, and their survival depends on staying away from humans. Therefore whilst you will see Orang-utans during the program, you shouldn’t expect a photo holding one. The purpose of the work you’ll be doing in Borneo is purely to support the overall goal of ensuring their survival.
Project Training & Jungle Journey — You will be met when you land in Indonesian Borneo by one of our UK trained Gapforce Leaders who will lead the team as you undertake basic safety and jungle survival training. Next, we set off on a 2 day journey into the jungle and the release sites! Four by fours will help us head deep into the jungle, but with a fast flowing river blocking the way, you’ll take a zip line across the river to reach our research station.
Borneo Orang-utan Protection - As part of the Government sponsored rehabilitation program, we will aid with construction of camp structures to support the permanent teams of scientists and local project staff. Radio tracking is also a vital way you will help to monitor the released Orang-utans in the area, as well as undertaking Volunteer Research Assistant work with the local scientists.
Indonesian Jungle Trek — Putting your bush craft training skills into practice, we will next complete our exciting jungle trek! You’ll head deep into the jungle, where you’ll get a rare chance to enjoy a true and undisturbed primary rainforest environment.
Island Beach And Chill Out — Emerging from the rainforest after 6 weeks, enjoy a well earned rest on an island paradise just off of Bali – Nusa Lembongan. Here you’ll have the chance to scuba dive, snorkel, sunbath or even kayak through the mangroves!
Bali Island Adventure — Immerse yourself in the culture with market visits, temple visits, a trip to the royal palace, and even a sunrise volcano hike! There are plenty of incredible activities to enjoy until that final flight home, which you just won’t want to take!
Why Bali and Borneo?
Bali is one of the 17,000 islands that make up Indonesia. While Borneo is a beautiful island owned by in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. Both islands have an exotic mix of cultures and customs, with indigenous tribes. Be prepared to be inspired by the dancing, drama and cooking of Balinese Hinduism. Balanced to this is the party hotspot of Huta. Your final destination is a great location to meet fellow global citizens. Bali is exotic, beautiful and compelling, your perfect gap year adventure.
"The remoteness of the location for this program is very unique, yet we are only a day’s flight from home. I had not realised how lucky we were to be here, Gapforce is the only project that works with Orang-utans, and the culture there is fascinating. Then we islanded hopped over to Java and Bali which are quite different to the interior. It may seem bizarre to Western culture but it works!"Jamie Bryant, Kent
I felt it was a life-changing experience. I had a great 6 weeks living in the jungle, learning many useful skills. I met some great people and made life-long friends. The local people were also amazing as they were so hospitable and friendly.Katie
