Overview:
Gapforce recruits Expedition Leaders on a contract-by-contract basis to lead our range of Gap Year and School Group adventure programs worldwide. Whilst we primarily recruit graduates from our Expedition Leader Training Course to lead our expeditions, we are always keen to build our database of experienced expedition professionals from outside of the course to call upon for short-term contracts, generally of two to eight weeks. Remuneration will be dependent on experience, and we require qualified leaders with experience leading groups of young adults or students in challenging environments.
Role & responsibilities:
As the designated Venture Leader, you will have overall responsibility for the management of the planned expedition including logistics, safety, security and wellbeing of participants. Your main responsibilities will include:
- Provide leadership for a group of young adults or students
- Be on-call 24 hours/day for duration of program and able to take charge in any situation where participants must be directed.
- Follow contingency, incident and emergency management processes, including administer first aid in the event of injury or illness and arrange evacuation to hospital if required.
- Conduct and follow thorough Risk Assessments and Casualty evacuation plans and update / amend where required.
- Supervise and accompany participants on all expedition activities to ensure they are conducted in a safe and professional manner.
- Ensure participant health, safety and wellbeing on an individual and group level.
- Attend to group dynamic and morale. Engage and motivate the group during activities.
- Maintain daily expenditure accounts, and keep expenses within the trip budget provided.
- Work with the Gapforce head office and partner organisations to execute planned daily logistics, including making group bookings where required.
- Represent Gapforce in host countries with professionalism, pride and courtesy.
- Maintain and develop relationships with in country contacts and partners.
- Provide post expedition reports and accounts
Key Skills & Experience:
Candidates should be able to demonstrate that they are proficient in the following areas:
- Proven expedition leadership experience with young adults or students
- Planning and organisational skills
- Budget management skills.
- An in-depth working knowledge of risk and safety management.
- First aid training to minimum Activity First Aid (16 hours)
- Clean DBS or criminal record background check
- Professional qualifications (e.g. Mountain Leader, OSSM, Water Safety & Rescue, Wilderness medic); preferred but not required.
